Doin’ it “doggy-style” in Arequipa

I’m the king of the world! And this meat cake

Christina Aguilera and Leonardo DiCaprio strike a pose in their special outfits – a princess costume for her and a swish tux for him – before digging into the beautifully decorated chicken liver cake placed on the table before them.

Party hat in place, I snap some pictures while Phil hastily puts down his Barbie cup full of beer to rescue the Disney-decorated paper plate of beef biscuits that Leo has suddenly lunged at.

Needless to say we aren’t partying with the American celebrities here, but the equally glossy-haired Latin American dogs of the same names.

Christina (Kris) and Leo are the two much-loved pets of our host family in Arequipa and today we are attending our very first pooch party.

Just don’t call me a glamourpuss: The lovely Princess Christina

It’s Christina’s birthday and host Eliana and her two nieces Cecilia and Carolina have pulled out all the stops to make it a doggy ‘do to remember.

The dogs have spent most of the day being preened and pampered in preparation for their time in the spotlight.

The sweet scent of canine cologne wafts around the balloon-filled dining room as they trot around proudly in their costumes, their fur specially washed, cut and blow-dried.

Why have banoffee pie when you can try this?

Leo follows Kris around everywhere – despite her being about ten years older than him, apparently it was love at first sight when they met and now they can’t bear to be apart. I like to think of them as the new Ashton and Demi.

Glistening water bowls, tasty treats and other birthday gifts shimmer in their unopened packaging from a side table around which stuffed teddies are seated, to join in the fun.

With our lovely hostesses with the mostest

Cecilia scoops Kris up in her arms and Carolina tries to restrain an excited Leo, who is by now standing on two paws trying to finish off a mini chicken sandwich he has found.

We all join in a rendition of “Cumpleaños Feliz” before Phil and I present the party with a specially-made banoffee pie, its creamy top adorned with chocolate shavings spelling out “Kris” and what were supposed to be some bones and hearts (but which unfortunately turned out looking like something else altogether).

Then it’s more beer and partying, Doggywood-style.

About travellingtoothbrushes

We are a couple of journalists with restless toothbrushes. Our teeth scrubbers seem unable to leap out of their respective washbags to take up a permanent residency on the bathroom shelf. So, we've decided to let them live the way they want to and take them on a trip around South America...

  1. Renee says:

What a barking good time:) I love the last pic of him tying one on – priceless!

  2. Hehe, cheers Renee! We also saw a small dog dressed as Batman on Halloween which was brilliant – no camera then though unfortunately!
